Golfers warned that signing a departure tour would lead to a ban on the PGA Tour | Golf

The best golfers in the world have been warned that if they agree to join Saudi Arabia’s proposed withdrawal regime, there will be an immediate suspension and perhaps a career ban from the PGA Tour.

Jay Monahan, PGA Tour Commissioner, made his position clear at a meeting with players scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Quail Hollow. It is understood that the European Tour takes the same position with respect to those who sign up to leave their domain. This is important in relation to the Ryder Cup qualification.

In a similar way to the failed European Super League scheme, Saudi wants to keep key players such as Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson away from the PGA Tour competition. The project is based on an individual and team format spanning 12-18 events, created over the years as a Premier Golf League, but recently recast as a Super Golf League. It remains unclear whether the collapse of ESL has caused a reconsideration on that front. September 2022 is the start date of the plan, led by Majed al-Sorour, Chief Executive Officer of Golf Saudi Arabia.

However, the PGA Tour has not been moved. Monaghan has made it clear to players that they will adhere to the regulations that protect their membership on the PGA Tour. This regulation prevents people from trying to do financial or reputational harm to an organization. Anyone who signs up for Saudi Arabia will soon lose PGA Tour status.

The PGA Tour is well aware that Saudi Arabia is coordinating Florida-based recruitment activities, but emphasizes to players that it lacks solid suggestions for tournaments and media trading. After Monaghan’s extensive speech, there were no questions from the floor about Saudi Arabia’s plans, not to mention the turmoil speculated elsewhere.

Monaghan provided additional details regarding the recently introduced Player Impact Fund. The Commissioner said the scheme is for the benefit of all members of the PGA Tour and will be managed by the new executive department.

Despite reports elsewhere, the Guardian understands that the player has not yet signed a contract and is providing a letter signed by Saudi Arabia. The short delay to that scenario is partly related to the ESL blunder. Once the paperwork is formalized, key players will be offered fairness on their new tours. In the analogy of an individual who understands the negotiations for a football transfer, there is also a huge signature on the fee as an incentive. It’s no exaggeration to suggest that the total financial package for certain players who are willing to leave the PGA Tour could reach over $ 100 million. However, the risk of experts seems to be enormous.

Representatives of Rose, Mickelson and Johnson did not respond to Guardian’s request for comment in relation to the client’s current position on the new tour. DeChambeau’s manager announced “no comment”.

Both DeChambeau and Mickelson are participating in the PGA Tour event in Charlotte this week. So is Rory McIlroy, who blamed PGL last year and expressed ethical concerns about the origin of its funding. McIlroy is the chairman of the PGA Tour Players Advisory Board and is therefore an important figure beyond his global sporting status.

The European Tour was strengthened by a strategic alliance with the PGA Tour, which was confirmed at the end of last year. Saudi Arabia claims its legitimacy through a high-profile invitation tournament on the European Tour. It is understood that the event is not a tentative schedule for 2022 and would be a big shock if it changed. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is trying to build relationships with Asia, Japan and the Sunshine Tour. Two-time open champion Greg Norman is believed to be one of the people advising Saudi Arabia. A Norman spokesman did not comment when approaching.
