Mesquite, Texas — This story is continually updated as WFAA receives new information.
A man was shot dead by police in Mesquite on Tuesday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Mesquite police. The man later died.
The shooting occurred shortly after 7:45 am when police officers were dispatched to a 911 hang-up call at 5800 blocks on Northwest Drive with apparent domestic violence.
A spokeswoman said the coordinator was able to hear screams and struggles in the background before the phone hung up.
When police arrived, police said they had encountered someone who believed they were involved in the case, and police shot him after a “quarrel.”
First responders took the man to a local hospital for treatment. A spokesman said he was in crisis at the time. Police later confirmed that the man had died during a briefing at 11:30 am on the scene. First responders were also called to treat the victims of the assault.
According to police, the man was shot “multiple times” by two police officers, called military veterans, a male police officer and a female police officer.
WFAA’s Rebecca Lopez was there during a police update. She said police would not say whether police recognized the man as a threat before the shooting. Police officers are currently being cross-examined.
A family member who spoke to Lopez on the scene said the man was known to the police for his mental health history.
One witness told WFAA that he saw a man with a cane before the shooting. Police did not say if he had more.
The WFAA asked if the officer was equipped with a non-lethal weapon such as a taser gun. A Mesquite police spokesman said these were optional and would not elaborate on whether the police officers who fired here had non-lethal weapons at the time of shooting.
Authorities are still working to collect more information.
