Union Minister Nitin Godkari of the Indian Government stated that this state intends to plant about one charging station in over 60000 fuel stations in the country. The minister who doubles up as the head of Road Transport and Highways articulated that this move will accelerate the purchase of electric vehicles by the country’s citizens.
Godkari emphasized in a virtual meeting that the Indian Government has been considering various measures to propel electric vehicles’ uptake. One of the strategies includes FAME schemes, which minimize electric vehicles’ upfront cost by about 6%. The Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) of India is ready to implement the idea of developing electric vehicle charging units at fuel stations.
The head of SMEV, Sohinder Gill, expressed the ideas of the agency concerning this strategy. Gill explained that they fully support the concept of installing charging units at every gas station and hopes that the active implementation of the strategy can be efficient. The advantage of this strategy is that it helps resolve the range anxiety problems that most customers would complain about as the failure to take up electric vehicles.
Nevertheless, Gill outlined that there are some challenges that they must address on the way forward. Some of the visible challenges he enumerated in the quest to accelerate electric vehicle uptake include the availability of parking lots for these cars and battery replacement resources for mini electric vehicles to make the utilization of these vehicles efficient.
Gill reiterated that these electric vehicles’ parking spaces must have charging points to recharge the vehicles for some hours while they are not in use. This strategy would take some time to realize, considering that not all parking lots have enough space to allow for this modification. Gill noted that the gas stations’ battery replacement facilities would resolve the battery problems that the electric vehicle owners might encounter in their expeditions.
Furthermore, Gill calls for the rollout of phase 2 of the FAME program to stimulate the uptake of electric bikes and three-wheelers in India. Moreover, Gill explained that the electric vehicle batteries’ high upfront cost must be lowered if they would be sold independently.
In conclusion, Nitin Godkar noted that India would become a center of automobile production by 2025 if these strategies are implemented as soon as possible. Additionally, the Government is advocating for the exploration of hydrogen energy technology and the development of hybrid electric vehicles to meet the customers’ varied demands.
